Detailed Itinerary: 5 Days Sahara Desert Tour from Marrakech

Day 1: Marrakech to Dades Valley via Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate

Your 5-day Sahara Desert tour from Marrakech begins with a scenic drive across the High Atlas Mountains and the famous Tizi n’Tichka pass, offering breathtaking panoramic views of traditional Berber villages and mountain peaks. The journey continues to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou, a stunning ksar known for its unique earthen clay architecture and its appearance in many famous films.

After exploring this historic village, you’ll head to Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Africa,” where you can visit the Taourirt Kasbah or Atlas Film Studios. In the afternoon, travel through the Valley of Roses and the scenic route of the Thousand Kasbahs before arriving in the Dades Valley. You’ll spend the night in a charming guesthouse or hotel overlooking the beautiful Dades Gorges.

Day 2: Dades Valley to Merzouga Desert via Todra Gorges and Erfoud

After breakfast, the tour continues through the impressive rock formations of the Dades Gorges. From there, you’ll travel to the Todra Gorges, a dramatic canyon carved by the Todra River. This is a perfect spot to stretch your legs, take photos, and enjoy a short walk through the towering cliffs. The journey proceeds through the town of Erfoud, well-known for its fossil workshops and desert vibes, before reaching the edge of the Sahara Desert in Merzouga.

Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted with mint tea and begin your camel trekking adventure across the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. As the sun sets over the Sahara, you’ll arrive at your luxury desert camp where a delicious dinner, traditional Berber music, and a night under the stars await you.

Day 3: Merzouga Desert Exploration and Overnight in a Desert Hotel

Wake up early to witness the magical sunrise over the dunes, followed by breakfast at the desert camp. Today is dedicated to exploring the cultural and natural wonders of the Merzouga region. You’ll visit the village of Khamlia, home to the Gnawa people, where you can enjoy their hypnotic traditional music. The tour continues off-road through the black desert (reg), where you’ll meet nomadic Berber families and learn about their way of life.

You’ll also visit the fossil-rich area of Taouz and enjoy views of the Merzouga palm grove. In the afternoon, you’ll check into a desert hotel or kasbah in Merzouga for your second night in the Sahara. Relax by the pool, walk among the dunes, or enjoy a traditional dinner at your hotel.

Day 4: Merzouga to Agdez via Rissani, Alnif, and Draa Valley

After breakfast, leave Merzouga behind and head towards Rissani, a historic town known for its traditional market and as the birthplace of the Alaouite dynasty. After a brief stop to explore the souk or try some local dates, continue through Alnif and the dramatic desert landscapes of the Anti-Atlas. The route leads you to the lush Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest palm valley, filled with ancient kasbahs and oases. You’ll arrive in Agdez, a peaceful and authentic oasis town at the foot of Jebel Kissane. Enjoy a calm evening and overnight stay in a charming kasbah or guesthouse nestled in the palm grove.

Day 5: Agdez to Marrakech via Ouarzazate and the High Atlas Mountains

On the final day of your Sahara desert trip from Marrakech, you’ll enjoy breakfast in Agdez before setting off for the return journey. Travel along the scenic Draa Valley once more, passing picturesque kasbahs and palm-filled landscapes. After a stop in Ouarzazate for lunch or a visit to a local site, the route ascends through the High Atlas Mountains and crosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass once again. The tour concludes in the vibrant city of Marrakech by the late afternoon, with drop-off at your hotel or riad. You’ll return with incredible memories of Morocco’s diverse landscapes, desert magic, and warm Berber hospitality.
